About The Book

Rescued at Christmas

Title: Rescued at Christmas
Series: Home to Maple Glen #2
Author: Janice Carter
Publisher: Harlequin Heartwarming
Release Date: November 26, 2024
Genre: Clean Contemporary Romance

Rescuing her was his Christmas miracle…

But will she be gone again by New Year’s?

Devon Fairchild arrives in the small town of Maple Glen just weeks before Christmas to honor a promise she made to her late brother. Then she’ll get back to her life in the city. But when she’s injured, firefighter Finn McAllister rescues her and takes her home to his family, who shower her with compassion and holiday cheer. For the first time, Devon starts to feel like she belongs. But the walls she’s built around her heart have always kept her safe. If she lets them fall, will she truly be rescued…or will it only lead to more heartbreak?

Excerpt

Devon didn’t know how long she’d been lying on the ground. She’d been careless, stopping on the path to stow her phone in her backpack. Then without hoisting the pack onto her shoulders, she’d held onto it a moment longer, taking one step forward without looking down. That had been her mistake. The cluster of composted leaves had covered a slick of ice, and her instinct to stop herself from falling had misfired badly. She’d felt the sharp pain in her ankle as she twisted it on the way down. The backpack she’d been holding flew into the brush alongside the path, the phone inside. Not that it would have been any use, as Bernie Watson had told her. After the first agonizing seconds, when she knew she wasn’t going to carry out her mission that day, Devon tried scootching toward the pack using her arms and hands, but the pain was too intense and the effort left her exhausted. Panting, she lay back down, staring up at the gray sky. Then the first large flakes of snow began to fall.

Series: The Vets of Heavenbrooke County #1
Author: Helena Smrcek
Publisher: EverWind Press
Release Date: November 15, 2024
Genre: Sweet Contemporary Romance

In the charming Heavenbrooke county, where country life meets big-city dreams, 28-year-old accountant Stella Barkley is about to discover that sometimes love arrives when you least expect it.

After a flat tire leaves her stranded on the side of the road, a handsome stranger comes to her rescue—Dr. Jason Alba, a dedicated veterinarian with a heart as big as his ambitions. Their initial encounter sparks an undeniable connection, aided by Stella’s spirited Jack Russell Terrier, Milkbone, who takes an immediate liking to Jason thanks to his pocket full of treats.

As their paths intertwine, Stella finds herself drawn to Jason, despite their differing views on farm life and future aspirations. Their budding romance takes unexpected turns, especially when a mysterious missing horse from a local breeder, Enrique Rodriguez, complicates matters.

When Thanksgiving arrives, Jason becomes Stella’s unexpected hero, saving her from a culinary disaster and charming her city friends with his warm spirit. But just as their relationship begins to flourish, a crisis emerges in the barn: the missing mare, Starling, is discovered in distress, leading Jason to perform a life-saving surgery that brings them even closer.

However, secrets and misunderstandings threaten to tear them apart. Stella’s desperate attempt to protect a champion mare sends her on a collision course with both Jason and Enrique, forcing her to confront her choices and the future she thought she wanted.

When Stella realizes that her life in Heavenbrooke may be over, she pens a heartfelt goodbye letter to Jason, leaving it at the church where their story began. Alone on Christmas morning, she grapples with loneliness and regret, only to be surprised by the appearance of the man who stole her heart.

Can a simple letter and the magic of Christmas lead them to a second chance? Will they find a way to bridge the divide between city and country, love and loyalty?

Join Stella and Jason on a heartfelt journey of love, loss, and the enduring power of second chances in Once Upon a Horse. Perfect for fans of contemporary romance, this tale of unexpected connections and the bonds we forge will leave you believing in the wonder of love.

Excerpt

Stella pulled on her favorite hat, the only remnant of her ski gear, and exited the truck. A quick inspection confirmed her fear. A flat. She shivered and shoved her hands into the deep pockets of her grandma’s parka, thankful for the warm pair of comfy Sorel boots.

Had anyone from Rogers and James Public Accountants Inc., her former downtown employer, seen her allowing Milkbone to ride shotgun in her grandpa’s pickup, they wouldn’t have believed their eyes. Thankfully, the chance of that happening was virtually zero.

Milkbone scratched at the window.

“No,” she said sternly, patting the pockets for her cellphone. The wind picked up. If only I remembered to throw a tool bag behind my seat.

Stella took off the cable knit mitts and tapped her phone to life. The frosty air nipped at her fingers. No service. Hoping for the impossible, she crossed the road. No luck.

She needed to get to work fast. Mr. Barnes insisted the store always be open on time, with no exceptions. The delivery guy never waited. And as if on cue, Milkbone changed his tactics to whining.

Stella did a quick 360 and scanned the seemingly endless fields stretching on both sides of the road. No farmhouse. She had been driving through this stretch for months now, not considering the possibility of becoming stranded with no help to be found.

Top 10 Tuesday — Stormy Books

10 Dec

Happy Tuesday! Today’s TTT topic is books to read in a storm. Because I live in the mostly sunny South, most of our storms do not include time to snuggle in and read. 😉 Hurricanes and tornadoes are the storms we face most often. I have only experienced two snowstorms in my life, each with a great deal of record setting snowfall. Those were times when a good book was definitely called for. So my list today features books in which a storm plays a part in the storyline. Interestingly, many are hurricanes. I guess I can’t get away from my roots! And for a fun twist, one of the authors name is Storm! I hope you find one to love.

Book Review: The Christmas Tree Farm

9 Dec

I like to include at least one Christmas novella leading into the holiday season. This year my book club chose to read The Christmas Tree Farm by Melody Carlson. If you are looking for a feel-good story with serious Hallmark vibes, then this one is for you.

When Madison McDowell returns from several years teaching overseas, she has high hopes of picking up where she left off at her family’s Christmas tree farm in Oregon. But between damage from a recent wildfire and the neglect due to her sister Addie’s unwillingness to invest, the farm is in sad shape. In fact, Addie is intent on selling the property. And to top it off, her former high school flame, the now-widowed Gavin Thompson, has plans to break Madison’s heart again by turning his neighboring property into a dusty, noisy dirt bike track for his daughter.

With the odds stacked against her, Madison decides there’s only one thing to do: double down on her dreams. It will take a ton of hard work–and some help from an unlikely ally–to save the farm she so dearly loves. But it may take a miracle to restore her relationship with her sister.

Bestselling and award-winning author Melody Carlson charms and delights with this uplifting Christmas story full of old memories and new beginnings.

Melody Carlson has written more than 200 books (with sales around 6.5 million) for teens, women and children. That’s a lot of books, but mostly she considers herself a “storyteller.” Her novels range from serious issues like schizophrenia (Finding Alice) to lighter topics like house-flipping (A Mile in My Flip-Flops) but most of the inspiration behind her fiction comes right out of real life. Her young adult novels (Diary of a Teenage Girl, TrueColors etc.) appeal to teenage girls around the world. Her annual Christmas novellas become more popular each year. She’s won a number of awards (including Romantic Time’s Career Achievement Award, the Rita and the Gold Medallion) and some of her books have been optioned for film/TV. Carlson has two grown sons and makes her home in the Pacific Northwest with her husband and yellow Lab dog. To find out more about Melody Carlson, visit her website at http://www.melodycarlson.com/

My Impressions:

Sometimes you want an uncomplicated, feel-good story with a Christmas-y setting. You will get that with Melody Carlson’s novella The Christmas Tree Farm. With serious Hallmark vibes, this holiday romance is set in the most Christmas location — a Christmas tree farm. The main character, Madison, returns to the place of her cherished childhood memories ready to begin a new life. She faces obstacles of a depressed economy and a manipulative younger sister, but puts in the work to bring the tree farm back to its former glory. She also has a second chance at love which is always a favorite trope. Add in a hunky leading man and an adorable kid sidekick and you have the elements for a fun Christmas read. Is it predictable? You bet! But sometimes that’s just what you want or need.

The Christmas Tree Farm isn’t my favorite of Carlson’s novellas, but it was a quick read that I found enjoyable. If you are looking for a light read with all the holiday trimmings, then give this one a try.

First Line Friday — Indigo Isle

6 Dec

Happy Friday! I am pleased to feature Christy Award winning author T. I. Lowe today. Her novel, Indigo Isle won the Christy for Contemporary Romance and Book of The Year! T. I. Lowe will be joining Turning A New Page Book Festival in Perry, Georgia on January 25, 2025! If you are anywhere around the middle Georgia area then, you need to make plans to attend.

Here’s the first line:

So this is how it feels to be near death and utterly alone.

“Storms show up and there ain’t a thing we can do to stop them.”

Sonny Bates left South Carolina fifteen years ago and never looked back. Now she’s a successful Hollywood location scout who travels the world, finding perfect places for movie shoots. Home is wherever she lands, and between her busy schedule and dealing with her boss’s demands, she has little time to think about the past . . . until her latest gig lands her a stone’s throw from everything she left behind.

Searching off the coast of Charleston for a secluded site to film a key scene, Sonny wanders onto a private barrier island and encounters its reclusive owner, known by locals as the Monster of Indigo Isle. What she finds is a man much more complex than the myth.

Once a successful New York attorney, Hudson Renfrow’s grief has exiled him to his island for several years. He spends his days alone, tending his fields of indigo, then making indigo dye―and he has no interest in serving the intrusive needs of a film company or yielding to Sonny’s determined curiosity. But when a hurricane makes landfall on the Carolina coast, stranding them together, an unlikely friendship forms between the two damaged souls. Soon the gruff exterior Hudson has long hidden behind crumbles―exposing the tender part of him that’s desperate for forgiveness and a second chance.

A story of hanging on and letting go, of redemption and reconciliation, and of a love that heals the deepest wounds, from the author of the breakout Southern fiction bestseller Under the Magnolias.

T. I. Lowe is an ordinary country girl who loves to tell extraordinary stories. She is the author of nearly twenty published novels, including her recent bestselling and critically acclaimed novel, Under the Magnolias, and her debut breakout, Lulu’s Café. She lives with her husband and family in coastal South Carolina. Find her at tilowe.com or on Facebook (T.I.Lowe), Instagram (tilowe), and Twitter (@TiLowe).

Spotlight on Regency Romance — An Unexpected Journey

An Unexpected Journey JustRead Blog Tour

Welcome to the Blog Tour for An Unexpected Journey by Ann Elizabeth Fryer, hosted by JustRead Publicity Tours!

About The Book

An Unexpected Journey

Title: An Unexpected Journey: A Regency Hobbit Retelling
Author: Ann Elizabeth Fryer
Publisher: Independently Published
Release Date: November 28, 2024
Genre: Regency Romance/Hobbit Retelling

A heritage neither of them desires, a wrong to right. A chance to end a family curse…

When strangers tumble through the doors of once resplendent Grandview Estate, Lady Laura Tamlow is pulled into a rather unexpected journey, away from the village she’s never left along with a gentleman unlike any she’s ever known.

Jonathan Canfield is out of options. And he’d do anything to restore his family fortunes in order to keep them from poverty, including roping Lady Tamlow into playing the part of thief. They must reclaim both his and her family jewels that were stolen the night of the fated Grand Masquerade of 1770, where both the Canfields and the Tamlows fell far from society’s good graces. If only his thief weren’t so lovely, he’d be able to focus on the mission without distraction.

But there’s a bigger problem at hand. The jewels reside at Lombard Park under the eye of Lord Herrington, a greedy dragon of a man who knows he’s about to die. Yet he has bigger claims than they ever imagined and attempts to steal something far more valuable than family jewels. With deception afoot, will Jonathan ever see Lady Tamlow again?

Excerpt

May 9, 1815

Hillshire, England

I poured a steaming cup of perfection and nestled before a quiet fire in my cozy parlor at Grandview Estate. This small miracle of a room had long been my refuge in this large and rather emptied home—if one could call it such.

A home ought to have a family within, not merely their leavings. My father’s spyglass remained on the old sea chest. Mother’s thin, brown shawl was carelessly slung over the chair where she’d left it. My brother’s frightful collection of pinned beetles and butterflies leaned against the bookcase, never to creep or flit about the earth again. Was I not pinned in place like them?

Alas, Father had been long deceased, I scarcely remembered him. Mother and Colin were away seeking fortune, and I was very much alone for months on end. Being closed in this cheerful space made me feel less so. The rose pattern on the walls, the snapping fire, and the pile of books at my disposal gave me a sense of being wrapped in my grandmother’s arms. God rest her soul.

About The Book

The Queen's Cook

Title: The Queen’s Cook
Series: Queen Esther’s Court #1
Author: Tessa Afshar
Publisher: Bethany House Publishers
Release Date: November 19, 2024
Genre: Historical Fiction, Biblical

In the heart of ancient Persia, the empire’s Jewish citizens face an ominous edict that threatens their very existence. Roxannah, the daughter of an impoverished Persian lord, is devastated by the news but feels helpless to come to the aid of her Jewish friends. Desperate to support her family, Roxannah approaches the royal physician, Adin–the man whose kind eyes haunt her–and seeks his help to find employment in Queen Esther’s kitchens.

In the opulent palace of Susa, Roxannah tries to survive the spiteful ploys of the other cooks as she ascends through the ranks. Her loyalty earns her the trust and friendship of Queen Esther, who is navigating dangerous politics with wisdom and grace. When Roxannah and Adin uncover a sinister plot against Amestris, the king’s most powerful wife and Esther’s archenemy, they find themselves tasked with the impossible job of discovering the culprit. As secrets unravel and alliances are tested, the fate of Esther’s reign hangs in the balance.

Excerpt

Roxannah snapped to her feet. She expected him to demand payment before accompanying her, but he simply waved at her to join him. “Head injury, my man tells me. Is he conscious?”

She blinked, surprised at this no-nonsense greeting. “Yes.”

“That’s a good sign.” He had a deep voice that seemed at once commanding and oddly soothing, edged by a slight accent that lent his speech an air of mystery.

Walking briskly, he led her to a plain gate at the opposite end of the courtyard, beyond which lay a wide lane. “It will be faster if we ride. My horse is in the stable around the corner. There is a donkey for you.” He gave her a sidelong glance. “You needn’t worry. It’s a biddable creature.”

“I can ride.”

He walked ahead into a mudbrick stable, whitewashed to match the outside walls. His steps were long and loping, and she found herself half running to keep up. His servant had followed in their wake, his movements so quiet she startled when he appeared at her side to help her mount the donkey. The beast waited placidly as she settled on its broad back.

She caught the servant’s eye and whispered, “What’s his name?”

He shrugged. “We just call him Donkey.”

“Not the beast. I meant the physician.”

The servant’s white teeth flashed against his salt-and-pepper beard. “Well, now. One might say that same name is not badly suited . . .”

The physician held up a warning finger. “Don’t finish that thought, no matter how great the temptation.” Eyes the color of obsidian sparked with humor.

Roxannah looked from one grinning face to the other, marveling at the ease with which the master had allowed his servant’s teasing insult to slide. In her father’s house, any retainer with half the cheek would have been bleeding by now.
