Sometimes a tough situation

Requires a leap of faith…

Unwed, unemployed and pregnant, Rebecca Young is in desperate need of a job. But finding work seems impossible. So when her late ex-boyfriend’s cousin Walker Greystone offers her room and board, and help getting a part-time job at the library he’s renovating in Eden, Texas, she eagerly accepts. But as they work together on a project that could change both of their lives, their feelings for one another deepen. Can Rebecca and Walker overcome their scars from the past and embrace the possibility of a happily-ever-after together?

Excerpt

“I booked a room at the Inn. I wanted to drop off his things and then prepare for the interview tomorrow.” Rebecca shifted her eyes to look at him. He could tell she was confused by all of Bell’s questions.

“Oh, no, you shouldn’t stay there. It’s just not safe. You can sleep here. No family of mine is overnighting at that place. Why, just last week our friend, Deputy Brian Arnold had to lock someone up for disorderly conduct in the lobby.”

Aunt Bell turned to him. “Walker, get her bag from her car, and I’ll set her up in the mother-in-law suite.”

“No, really, I—”

Bell patted Rebecca’s hand. If the situation wasn’t so serious, he would laugh. But he knew that there was no way Aunt Bell would allow Rebecca to leave her sight.

“We have so much space here at the ranch, honey. It’s not a big deal. Besides, we must think of the safety of you and the baby.”

After a long pause, Rebecca finally gave in. “Well…all right, thank you.” Aunt Bell had raised five boys in her household. She was strong-willed and could get anyone to do anything she wanted before a person even realized she was doing it.

Bell patted the hand she was holding. “Perfect. Now, let me show you to your room while Walker gets your bag. Don’t just stand there, Walker. Go on.” He nodded and jumped up off the couch.

“This way, dear. It’s perfect timing. Walker’s brothers are coming over for Sunday family lunch in about an hour, so you can meet everyone.” Walker didn’t hear Rebecca’s response as she and Aunt Bell disappeared around the corner that led to the bedrooms.

What was really going on here? He needed time to figure it all out. And having the woman who claimed to having his late cousin’s child here, even overnight, would help him get answers. Plus, he was certain Aunt Bell would be devastated if Rebecca left with her only grandchild.

If this truly was Vince’s baby, he would figure out a way to keep the baby close.

Spotlight on End Times Thriller — Vanished

21 Jul

I am so pleased to feature the new end times thriller, Vanished, from Dr. David Jeremiah. Read all about it below and enjoy the excerpt.

Vanished

Author: Dr. David Jeremiah (with Sam O’Neal)

Publisher: Thomas Nelson

Publication date: July 1, 2025

The end of the world . . .

As leader of a special military unit charged with stopping potential pandemics before they spread, John “Haggs” Haggerty has a front-row seat to the sharp increase in natural disasters that precede the Rapture–including plagues, earthquakes, famines, wars, and rumors of war. And each crisis is becoming more intense.

Meanwhile, his own world feels like it’s falling apart. He’s still caught in the grief of messing up his relationship with his ex-wife, and he’s trying to keep it together so that he can show up for his adult daughter before she wants him out of her life entirely. As both personal and professional situations push him to the brink, Haggs finds himself stretched further than ever in his desire to be the kind of good person he knows he should be.

Just when it seems as if things might turn around, Haggs is forced to decide between his need to find solutions and his need for personal redemption.

Excerpt

“I don’t think it’s possible for anyone to hear what we’ve heard today without coming to the conclusion that our world is in trouble. I don’t mean our culture. I don’t mean our way of life. I mean our civilization. We are currently experiencing something unprecedented not only in our lifetimes, but seemingly in human history. An extraordinary rise in seismic activity, catastrophic storms, and flooding. An extraordinary increase in regional epidemics and global pandemics. An extraordinary surge in famines and food insecurity across multiple continents. And an extraordinary flood of refugees seeking shelter and finding none.

“There is no doubt that many of these crises can be seen as the avoidable consequences of our own actions as a civilization.” She glanced over at Singh, then away. “But there is also little doubt in my mind that we are facing calamity at a scale we have never before considered. Ladies and gentlemen . . .” She paused as she scanned the room. “I am not exaggerating when I say the world is in danger. Humanity is in danger. But I am also not exaggerating when I declare that those of us in this room are equipped to meet that calamity head-on—and to steer our world to victory.

“We’re at a tipping point, and I believe the actions taken by our five task forces over the next twelve months will determine whether humanity advances to our destiny—or retreats into oblivion. So, let’s go save the world.”

First Line Friday — The Light on Horn Island

18 Jul

Happy Friday! If you are looking for a beach-y read, look no further than The Light on Horn Island by Valerie Fraser Luesse. Set in the early 2000s on the Mississippi coast, it also highlights devastating Hurricane Camille that hit that state in 1969. It is pure southern and pays homage to all that is great about the Mississippi gulf coast. I loved the multigenerational cast of characters and the magical element that Luesse introduces. Or is it supernatural? You decide!

Here’s the first line:

Good pimento cheese is a reason to live.

Just when her life comes crumbling down, she discovers secrets that could shape her future–and heal her past.

When Edie Gardner’s life in New York falls apart, her grandmother Adele “Punk” Cheramie coaxes her back to tiny Bayou du Chêne, Mississippi. Edie spent many happy summers there, a stone’s throw from untamed Horn Island, where she once found love. Can she now demystify the island’s strange new light?

Punk and her colorful friends introduce Edie to the Trove, a fascinating gallery and antique shop. Like Horn Island’s light, The Trove has appeared out of nowhere. Its proprietor, with a gift for discerning his customers’ needs, gives Edie a Victorian parlor game that asks players a series of personal questions, which is harmless fun at first. But Edie and her grandmother’s circle find that the game has a way of uncovering secrets, including a heartbreak that has haunted one of the women for decades. Banding together, this Southern sisterhood is determined to find answers that will bring healing, hope, and happiness–and maybe explain the transcendent illumination of a wild and windswept barrier island.

Valerie Fraser Luesse is the author of novels set in the South. An award-winning magazine writer, Luesse is perhaps best known for her feature stories and essays in Southern Living, where she wrote major pieces on the Mississippi Delta, Acadian Louisiana, and the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Her editorial section on the recovering Gulf Coast after Hurricane Katrina, photographed by Mark Sandlin, won the 2009 Travel Writer of the Year award from the Southeast Tourism Society. Luesse earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in English from Auburn University and Baylor University, respectively. What Brings Us Joy JustRead Blog Tour

Welcome to the Blog Tour for What Brings Us Joy by Teresa Wells, hosted by JustRead Publicity Tours!

About The Book

What Brings Us Joy

Title: What Brings Us Joy
Series: The Truitts of Texas #1
Author: Teresa Wells
Publisher: Scrivenings Press LLC
Release Date: July 15, 2025
Genre: Christian Historical Romance

1895: After losing their Georgia home, eighteen-year-old Delia Truitt and her family move to Blooming Grove, Texas, to work for a relative on a ramshackle farm. Set on helping her family dig out of their impoverished circumstances, she plans to open a dressmaker’s shop, combining her sewing skills and her keen fashion sense. But owning a business takes money she doesn’t have.

Unless she can finish her quilt in time to enter the county fair. The prize money would be just enough to open her shop. Determined and resourceful, Delia sets her sights on success—until her heart takes an unexpected detour when she meets handsome Clarence Parker.

Bent on respectability, Clarence refuses to let his past get in the way of his future happiness, especially after falling for spirited Delia Truitt. But his hopes shatter when headlines declare members of his former gang have broken out of jail and are heading his way, set on revenge. Though Clarence doesn’t regret testifying against the outlaws, he fears his future with Delia is in jeopardy. Clarence will protect her from the killers, even if it means risking their future together.

Can Clarence keep her safe? And will Delia love him after she finds out about his past?

Excerpt

Now they were getting deep. She wasn’t ready to bare her soul. “Independence appeals to me.” That was true enough. She ruffled the soft grass with the palm of her hand.

Slowly, he sat upright. “Independence is a powerful drug, Delia. It can be life-giving, and it can be lethal.”

“I don’t understand.” If he didn’t look so somber, she would have thought he teased her.

“Someday you will.” Those gray-green eyes reflected an emotion she couldn’t pin down. She had a feeling even if she knew the circumstances behind his wisdom, he would still be a mystery.

He took the lemonade glass and drank until it was empty. When he spoke, his tone was light. “My sister said you are entering the fair this fall.”

“I think it’s a good way for people to see my work. After all, I’ll have to drum up interest before I can start my business.”

“Why not enter a dress you’ve sewn?”

“Most women can make a dress. But crazy quilts? It takes time and skill, and many don’t finish.” She snapped her mouth shut. She’d already told him all this. “I could go on and on when it comes to crazy quilts. Let’s talk about you.”

He shifted, his arms circling a knee. “Don’t believe anything Sallie says.”

Spotlight on Christmas Historical Romance — The Neighbor And The Gifts

The Neighbor and the Gifts JustRead Blog + Review Tour

Welcome to the Blog + Review Tour for The Neighbor and the Gifts by Danielle Grandinetti, hosted by JustRead Publicity Tours!

About The Book

The Neighbor and the Gifts

Title: The Neighbor and The Gifts
Series: A Christmas Cabin Novella
Author: Danielle Grandinetti
Publisher: Hearth Spot Press
Release Date: July 15, 2025
Genre: Christmas Historical Romantic Suspense

Twelve days. Twelve gifts. One unlikely hero.

Wisconsin, 1930—When Manitowish Waters librarian Olivia “Ollie” Larson finds a package on the library steps, she expects the children’s books she ordered, not a taxidermied partridge. By the fourth gift from her unknown and unwelcome True Love, disappearing to her grandfather’s isolated cabin in the Northwoods is the only way she can escape him.

Deputy Titus Wilburn is happy to escort the lovely librarian to her grandfather’s house on his way to the neighboring Yarwood cabin. After all, he’s been smitten with her since they attended school together, and she needs his protection. However, the plan fails when Ollie’s uninvited suitor discovers her new location.

As the man’s actions become more desperate and his gifts more dangerous, an unexpectedly bedridden Titus decides to free Ollie from this menace, which puts the enemy’s sights directly on him. Ollie refuses to let her injured hero sacrifice himself, but with the days ticking closer to Christmas, she may have no choice but to accept whatever fate her suitor has in store for her if she wants to save Titus’ life.

One cabin in the Northwoods … a decade of Christmas miracles.

Excerpt

“Keep an eye on her.” Casper pointed his chin at the box as he shrugged into his coat. “My gut says that package was meant for Ollie. We need to find out why.”

Titus agreed.

“Maybe she’ll finally talk to you.” Casper grinned, then winked. “Being loved by a good woman makes life worth living.”

“Yeah, yeah. Tell Eira Mae hello for me.” Titus shook his head as his boss left. He was happy for his friend. Honestly, he was. But Casper’s tease hit too close to home. Titus wanted a girl like Casper had found in Eira Mae, and only one had ever fit the picture in his mind.

Titus scrounged up a stack of old newspaper and carefully lifted the bird from the package to prepare it for its ceremony. He hoped this would allow Ollie to lay the trauma to rest just as much as the bird. She had such a quiet, gentle, sensitive soul.

As he settled the bird on the newsprint, a piece of paper fluttered to the ground beside his boot. He lifted it by the corner so as not to smudge the writing, and any question that the package had anything to do with the library vanished.

To my true love: please accept this gift of provision.

Titus turned cold. Ollie had a secret admirer.

Mini-Book Review — Becoming Madam Secretary

14 Jul

One of my book clubs loves biographical fiction, and an author who writes it so well is Stephanie Dray. This month we chose Becoming Madam Secretary, a novel focused on Frances Perkins, the Labor Secretary under FDR. Oh my! What a fascinating story! Perkins is often referred to as the mother of Social Security. Her career began as a social worker in Hell’s Kitchen in New York City and proceeded to rise as she fought for better working conditions, especially for women. She was a crusader against child labor and helped pass legislation limiting work hours. Dray’s novel is meticulously researched and in the absence of details on Perkin’s private life, she carefully created plausible scenarios. The book comes in at 500+ pages and is not full of a lot of action, but it was certainly an enjoyable, as well as, illuminating read. I highly recommend this book for those who love historical/biographical fiction, especially that highlight the cultural and political events of first part of the 20th century.

Highly recommended.

Audience: Adults.

(I purchased the ebook from Amazon. All opinions expressed are mine alone.)

She took on titans, battled generals, and changed the world as we know it…

New York Times
bestselling author Stephanie Dray returns with a captivating and dramatic novel about an American heroine Frances Perkins.

Raised on tales of her revolutionary ancestors, Frances Perkins arrives in New York City at the turn of the century, armed with her trusty parasol and an unyielding determination to make a difference.

When she’s not working with children in the crowded tenements in Hell’s Kitchen, Frances throws herself into the social scene in Greenwich Village, befriending an eclectic group of politicians, artists, and activists, including the millionaire socialite Mary Harriman Rumsey, the flirtatious budding author Sinclair Lewis, and the brilliant but troubled reformer Paul Wilson, with whom she falls deeply in love.

But when Frances meets a young lawyer named Franklin Delano Roosevelt at a tea dance, sparks fly in all the wrong directions. She thinks he’s a rich, arrogant dilettante who gets by on a handsome face and a famous name. He thinks she’s a priggish bluestocking and insufferable do-gooder. Neither knows it yet, but over the next twenty years, they will form a historic partnership that will carry them both to the White House.

Frances is destined to rise in a political world dominated by men, facing down the Great Depression as FDR’s most trusted lieutenant—even as she struggles to balance the demands of a public career with marriage and motherhood. And when vicious political attacks mount and personal tragedies threaten to derail her ambitions, she must decide what she’s willing to do—and what she’s willing to sacrifice—to save a nation.

Stephanie Dray is a New York Times, Wall Street Journal & USA Today bestselling author of historical fiction. Her award-winning work has been translated into ten languages and tops lists for the most anticipated reads of the year. She lives in Maryland with her husband, cats, and history books.

First Line Friday — When The Wildflowers Bloom Again

11 Jul

Happy Friday! I am happy to share the first line of a 2025 Carol Award FinalistWhen The Wildflowers Bloom Again by Donna Jo Stone. As one endorsement says: this coming of age story contains a heartbreaking topic that Stone handles with grace and love (Danielle Grandinetti). I’m looking forward to reading this book. Look for my review in the coming months.

But for now, here’s the first line:

Sometimes I wished my momma understood me more, but sometimes I was glad she didn’t.

Babies are a gift of God, a fact Marigold Parker knows full well.

Fourteen-year-old Marigold (Mary) Parker spends the summer of ’78 with her cousin and best friend, Sharon, biking the roads of their rural neighborhood in Pleasant Waters, North Louisiana. The girls while away the days at the local pond, listening to the BeeGees and talking about boys. Caring for her emotionally fragile mother is Mary’s only worry, until Sharon’s older half-brother finds Mary alone at the pond one day.

She can’t speak of what happened in the woods. The truth will destroy her family and cost her the relationships she holds most precious.

But secrets have a way of making themselves known, and when Mary finds herself pregnant, she’s forced to grapple with hard decisions. Babies are a gift from God. Mary knows this full well, but she doesn’t know how to deal with a pregnancy, or who to turn to for help.

Trials seem to multiply as Mary struggles to keep faith in the God her parents have taught her to trust.

Richly detailed and evocative, When the Wildflowers Bloom Again captures the emotions and the heart, vividly detailing the struggle of facing impossible choices, the true test of family ties, and of the hope found in new beginnings. Infused with both sorrow and faith, Marigold Parker’s tale is a story you won’t soon forget.

Donna Jo Stone is an award-winning author of historical, contemporary, and young adult fiction.

Life is messy and beautiful. In everyone’s story, there is truth and hope. Donna Jo’s novels are about common struggles and finding the faith to carry on through those battles.

When she’s not writing, she loves to read and talk about books, poke around in old bookshops and museums, and spend time with her family.

Spotlight on Mystery/Romantic Suspense — Fire Mountain

10 Jul

Fire Mountain JustRead Takeover Blitz

Welcome to the Takeover Blitz for Fire Mountain by Dana Mentink hosted by JustRead Publicity Tours!

About The Book

Fire Mountain

Title: Fire Mountain
Series: Elements of Danger #1
Author: Dana Mentink
Publisher: Revell
Release Date: July 1, 2025
Genre: Mystery & Romantic Suspense

Fire rains from above as they fight to discover the truth and stay alive.

In the shadow of a threatening volcano, long-haul trucker Kit Garrido wakes up in her crashed big rig, unable to recall what happened or why she’s suddenly in possession of someone’s baby. Fiercely independent, she has to admit that perhaps this time she could use a little help.

As the threat of eruption grows, former cop Cullen Landry refuses to leave his cabin in the evacuation area, which is why he’s the only one left who can help Kit escape the crumpled cab of her truck. He doesn’t want to get tangled up in the mystery of the beautiful woman with an abandoned infant, but when he sees the bullet hole in the windshield and the bloody handprint on the interior, he realizes that he’s in this thing, like it or not.

When two armed men with ill intent approach, the race is on to stay alive, discover the truth, and find the baby’s missing mother–all while a deadly mountain rains fire from above.

Excerpt

Debris shot around them, rocking the trailer.

Unbelievable. They would die here in her truck, the machine she loved that had given her an independent life. A boulder slammed into the roof, the percussion swal- lowing her scream. Would the roof give? Cullen leapt up, pushed her behind the driver’s seat, and crouched beside her. Her heart thundered so hard she was sure he could feel it, his wide chest pressed against her shoulder. The percussion of the earth piling all around them was like the onslaught of a hurricane.

Time stood still. Five seconds? Ten? Fifteen? And then it stopped.

Her breath came in harsh gasps.

He crept to the window. “Well, you’re not driving this rig anytime soon, but it appears we won’t be buried alive just now.”

She forced her lungs to do their job. “We can dig out. I’ve got a small shovel.”

He opened his mouth to answer when a strange noise emanated from the sleeping area. They both jerked as if they’d been touched by hot lava.

That sound . . .

It couldn’t be what she thought it was. Her brain was misfiring. It had to be the concussion.

But the noise continued, and Cullen looked as if he’d heard it too. The hairs on the back of her neck prickled. “What . . . what is that?”

His intense stare added to her unease. “You said you never carry any passengers.”

Passengers? “I don’t.” She gaped.

He shoved aside the curtain to the sleeping area and crawled inside. She was immobile as he returned a moment later, eyes wide with shock, holding a car seat. The seat held a baby in pink pajamas who wriggled, let out a cry, and strained against the straps of her carrier. The tooth- less mouth opened wide like that of a newly hatched bird.

Kit could not summon a single word.

“Her seat was belted to the chair in your sleeping area.” He looked from the baby to Kit, his expression hardening with suspicion. “Well?”

She blinked, nerves screaming. “I . . .”

He cocked his head. “How exactly did this baby get into your truck, Kit Garrido?”
