My Impressions:

This book will get your kids begging  to break out those eggs, so it is a big plus that the back cover has instructions for perfecting your own dyed eggs. Don’t wait until Easter morning for this one!

All the woodland animals join Little Duckling in praising God in Little Duckling’s Easter Prayers. The colorful illustrations match the simple rhyming prayers that talk of the wonders of nature and God’s love and promises. I especially liked that at the end of each simple prayer there is an accompanying Bible verse. What a great way to introduce a habit of devotional time for the family. If you are looking for a non-candy alternative for the Easter basket, this one is perfect.

Every member of the family gets involved — parents, grands, and siblings. I thought the illustrations were adorable, even when Nana is portrayed as a snake 😉 ! Simple rhymes and bright colors will keep your child engaged.

My Impressions:

Piper And Mabel is so stinking cute! The two dog sisters are described as wild, but very good — a pretty apt description as they navigate being left behind when their family goes on vacation. An engaging story with two adorable main characters is complimented with highly detailed and whimsical illustrations. This book is great for a family read-along or for readers practicing their skills. It is definitely a must-read for the dog-loving child in your life!

My Impressions:

The Berenstain Bears are back in an easy-to-read chapter book for young elementary school-aged kids — The Trouble with Tryouts. My Impressions:

I am going to be a grandmother for the first time in a few months. Woo hoo! So I am on the look out for books to share with my grand-blessing. Great And Small Prayers for Babies is a wonderful book for the smallest of children. Its sturdy board book construction will take any over-reading 😉 , while its sweet illustrations, simple rhyme, and multiple surprises will delight a toddler. I loved the contrasts that appear within the pages — a great way to engage young readers. I can’t wait to read this one with my grandchild!

I won’t pretend there aren’t a few (ok, a lot) of groaners in the bunch, but you will chuckle at the fun your kids will have.

Top 10 Tuesday — Thanksgiving Reading for Youngsters (And Young at Heart)

I am thankful for many things this year — my wonderful husband, my beautiful and independent kids, my family and friends, my health . . . the list goes on and on. Not every one in my family will be around the table this year, but I am grateful for texting and calling and the knowledge that we will be seeing each other soon. After the meal is devoured and the kitchen is cleaned, football takes center stage. Big games will be watched and the gang will be cheering (and coaching) for their favorite teams. And me? I am thankful that there’s a bit of quiet away from the TV to read!

Today, I am featuring some children’s books that focus on thankfulness — thankfulness for what we have and thankfulness for Who has given it. I hope you find a book to share with your kids/grandkids.

First Line Friday — Love You Forever

Happy Friday and Happy Birthday to my daughter Allison! This sweetheart has been such a blessing to our family. In honor of her, I am featuring a book all my children enjoyed, mostly because it made their mother cry! When I brought Love You Forever by Robert Munsch home all those years ago, I didn’t realize how much of an impact it would make on me. My kids were tiny, so all the stages the mom goes through were mere glimpses of my future. I’m not quite living the ending . . . yet 😉 , but my husband is with his own mom. Life is sweet and beautiful and sometimes hard. I’ll conclude now because the tears are welling.

So begins the story that has touched the hearts of millions worldwide. Since publication in l986, Love You Forever has sold more than 15 million copies in paperback and the regular hardcover edition (as well as hundreds of thousands of copies in Spanish and French).

 

Robert Munsch is the author of more than 25 books for children including The Paper Bag Princes and Stephanie’s Ponytail. He was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and studied to be a Jesuit priest before deciding to work with children instead. He taught in a variety of nursery schools and daycare centers while he earned an MA in Early Childhood Education. In 1975, Munsch and his wife, Ann, moved to Guelph, Ontario. The Munschs have three children: Julie, Andrew, and Tyya (see them all in Something Good!).
