He drew closer, intending to remove a piece of straw sticking in her hair, but instead his fingers brushed her cheek. Her breathing hitched at his touch, and the storm faded into the dimness around them, leaving just him and Della.
Her eyes sought his before drifting to his mouth and then back. He didn’t need her to smile to read the questions she held. They matched the ones running through his mind. To answer them, he rested his forehead against hers, erasing what space there was left between them.
“Della.” He didn’t know why he was whispering. All he knew was that he was trying to think of a reason not to kiss his own wife.
