First Line Friday — Beneath The Surface by Lynn H. Blackburn

9 Mar

Welcome to another First Line Friday! This week I am spotlighting a new novel in my favorite genre — suspense! Lynn H. Blackburn has just released the first book in the Dive Team Investigations series, Beneath The Surface. The reviews so far have been raves! I can’t wait to dive into this one myself (sorry 😉 ) in a few days.

To join the First Line Friday fun, leave a comment with the first sentence of the closest book and then head over to Hoarding Books to check out other bloggers’ first lines.

After a harrowing experience with an obsessed patient, oncology nurse practitioner Leigh Weston needed a change. She thought she’d left her troubles behind when she moved home to Carrington, North Carolina, and took a job in the emergency department of the local hospital. But when someone tampers with her brakes, she fears the past has chased her into the present. She reaches out to her high school friend turned homicide investigator, Ryan Parker, for help.

Ryan finds satisfaction in his career, but his favorite way to use his skills is as a volunteer underwater investigator with the Carrington County Sheriff’s Office dive team. When the body of a wealthy businessman is discovered in Lake Porter, the investigation uncovers a possible serial killer–one with a terrifying connection to Leigh Weston and deadly implications for them all.

Dive into the depths of fear with an exciting new voice in romantic suspense. Award-winning author Lynn H. Blackburn grabs readers by the throat and doesn’t let go until the final heart-pounding page.

Her first book, Covert Justice, won the 2016 Selah Award for Mystery/Suspense and the 2016 Carol Award for Short Novel. Her second book, Hidden Legacy, released June 2017. This book was great. I have a new must-read romantic suspense author!

I’m currently reading “My Heart Belongs in San Francisco, California: Abby’s Prospects” by Janice Thompson. The first line is: “Never underestimate the power of coffee, Neville.”

    Enjoy your weekend!

I can’t wait to read this book!!!!

I’ll share a first line from the new release by Jessica Patch.

“Do you ever feel like sometimes the sunshine is deceiving because the day is going to be ominous regardless of how bright it is?”

Over on my blog today I’m sharing the first line from Michelle Griep’s newest book “The Innkeeper’s Daughter”. Drop on by if you get the chance and let me know if you are a fan of numbers. Have a wonderful weekend!

Although numbers are my job — I keep the books for my husband’s business — I am not a numbers girl. English was my thing in school.

    Sounds like a great book!

Father Brian Flynn, the curate at St. Augustine’s, Rossmore, hated the Feast Day of St. Ann with a passion that was unusual for a Catholic priest. – Whitethorn Woods by Maeve Binchy

    Happy Friday!

My FLF comes from a book I will be starting later this weekend, Love’s Journey in SugarCreek by Sienna Miller.

The leather on Rachel Troyer’s gun holster creaked as she shifted her weight on the kitchen chair. Her three elderly Amish aunts shot wary glances toward the offending weapon.

Have a great weekend and Happy Reading!😁📚

Over on my blog, I’m sharing the first line of a wonderful new book about the Maccabees, Judah’s Wife, but here I’ll share the first line of the nonfiction book I’m reading now, Our Unmet Needs by Charles Stanley: “Do you have a nagging, gnawing feeling that something isn’t quite right in your life? Do you feel overwhelmed by a need you can’t meet, a problem you can’t solve, or a question you can’t answer? Are you able to identify the real need that underlies your feelings of uneasiness, fear, worry, or restlessness?”

Happy Friday! I always love seeing what everyone is reading when I get to stop by! My first line is from A Refuge Assured by Jocelyn Green:

“Propping open the door to her shop, Vivienne Rivard listened to a distant rumble that vibrated the windows and shivered in her chest.”

    • rbclibrary March 9, 2018 at 5:17 pm #

Love the cover of that book, and of course I’ve heard great things are inside. 😉

Here, I will share the first line from a book by C.H. Spurgeon that I’m currently reading. “‘Thou has visited me in the night.’ –Psalm 18:3. ‘Tis a theme for wonder that the glorious God should visit sinful man.” Wishing you a blessed weekend.

    Happy Friday!

Over on my blog today, I am sharing the first line from Kristi Ann Hunter’s new novella, A Search for Refuge. I’m just on chapter two, so I will share the first line from that chapter here:

“Nash slid the tin of peppermints into his coat pocket and reached beneath the counter to pull out Mrs. Lancaster’s log book.”

    • rbclibrary March 9, 2018 at 5:16 pm #

      Hope you enjoy both books!

Great line! I am featuring Olivia Twist on my blog so here I’ll share the first line from The Man He Never Was by James Rubart. Toren Daniels rolled over in bed and light pierced his closed eyelids, which meant five a.m. had come and gone.

    • rbclibrary March 9, 2018 at 5:15 pm #

I really like James Rubart, but haven’t read this one yet. Thanks for sharing!

My first line is from A Most Noble Heir by Susan Anne Mason:
    Derbyshire, England
    March, 1884
Nolan Price scanned the fields of newly budding greenery that stretched as far as he could see and slowly inhaled the scent of grass, soil, and freshly spread manure.

My current first line is from Robin E. Mason’s The Silent Song of Winter: “The sounds of the swamp in winter would scare another person but not me. I grew up here.”

    • rbclibrary March 9, 2018 at 9:38 pm #

That is a good line! Thanks for sharing, Carrie.

Beneath the Surface by Lynn Blackburn sounds exciting! I’m eager to read it. I’m currently reading Bringing Them Home by Barbara Hinske, and the first line is as follows:”
“Chuck Delgado yanked the cord on the mini blinds and opened his office window to the moonless night.”

    • rbclibrary March 9, 2018 at 9:37 pm #

I have one book ahead of Beneath The Surface! I will have to read faster. Thanks for sharing your first line.

I’m a romantic suspense fan, so I’ll definitely be checking this one out. Thanks for sharing!

I’ve seen this book around – I’ll have to check it out.

I’m featuring The Heart Between Us by Lindsay Harrel on my blog today (brilliant novel!), and I’m currently reading Grace Restored by Toni Shiloh. Here’s the first line of Chapter One:

Victory was hers. The judge had sentenced Brett Donn to twenty years in prison for operating a vehicle while intoxicated.

    • rbclibrary March 11, 2018 at 2:47 pm #

I loved Harrel’s novel! Thanks for sharing Toni’s first line. I haven’t read anything by her . . . yet. Must remedy that.
