By book club loves a story set in an exotic locale, but we also love a book set in our own backyards — the Sunny South! I’ve compiled a list of books (18 in fact!) with Southern settings that will be a hit with your book club; many were hits with mine and the others I don’t hesitate to recommend. I could have gone on and on — so many great books set in the South! You may also see I am kind of partial to books set in my home state of Georgia!

What’s your favorite setting?
The modern story line in Mindy Starns Clark and Leslie Gould’s book entitled My Daughter’s Prayer was set in Richmond, Virginia, where I was raised. It gave me great pleasure to reminisce about seeing the locations mentioned in that novel.
I love when I am visiting familiar places in a book. Have you read any of Sibella Giorello’s books? Many of those are set in Richmond too.
My neighborhood book club likes to read books set in the South at least once a year (we live in NC). We recently read A Southern Girl by John Warley.

I love reading books from a variety of settings, but I am partial to those in a Southern context. I grew up in southeast TX, spent most of my adult life in SC, with brief exile into Georgia, and now we’re in TN. Elizabeth Musser came to mind when I first started reading your post, so I am glad to see the Swan House listed. We lived just outside Atlanta for 4 years and that book brought back a lot of the feel of it as did Searching for Eternity, also set partly there and partly in France. Words Unspoken was the first book of hers I ever read, and it’s set in TN. I just finished a while back Lisa Wingate’s The Prayer Box, set in the Outer Banks of NC, and loved the setting.
My book club loves Elizabeth Musser. We have read a bunch of her books. We have even taken 2 “field trips” to Atlanta to visit scenes in the books. The Prayer Box is a favorite of mine as well — I should have included it too.
